Summary of CMA Professional Development Modules
Workshop 1: Coaching Masters Sport
A starting point of what coaches know and how they perceive their role within their Masters sport league. We will discuss questions like:
- What do Masters athletes want from their coaches?
- What are adult learning principles and how do they apply in sport?
- How can you, as a coach, support a quality masters sport experience for your athletes?
Workshop 2: Adult-Oriented Sport Coaching Approaches
Coaches learn about the Adult Oriented Sport Coaching Survey (AOSCS): a self-assessment tool to think about their coaching orientation and how it addresses the motivations of adult athletes. Coaches discuss how they use AOSCS themes and items, revealing what they do often and what they may not do much. The reflection process helps to deepen coaches’ understanding of what they do and what they could do to coach in an adult-oriented manner.
Workshop 3: Applying Adult-Oriented Approaches
Coaches review their own and, if possible, their athletes’ responses to the Adult Oriented Sport Coaching Survey and discuss athletes’ preferences for adult-oriented approaches. We explore how coaches can engage with different adult-oriented approaches across the season and with different athletes. Coaches will be well equipped to choose various adult-oriented approaches that support their Masters athletes’ motivations and interests. They will also be able to relate to a coaching profile – the gatherer, the inspirer, the connector, the diplomat, or the tailor. Each of these have different strengths, and they can see how these strengths support their athletes in different ways to have a quality masters sport experience.
In summary, these workshops unlock the secrets of how coaches can help their adult athletes – and themselves – to love their sport, their group, and their time together.
